The last week of June, our co-founder, Lisa Stoner, was deployed with the Humane Society of the United States NDART (National Disaster Animal Response Team) team to Tennessee with no idea what they were going to do.

One week later, we are happy to report that they have removed 747 animals (dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, birds, goats and chickens) from deplorable conditions and the survivors have all made it to shelters around the US and soon will be up for adoption.

The woman who operated the puppy mill has been charged in the past and has managed to have the case overturned due to legal issues. This time, the evidence is being handled by the ASPCA CSI unit and Dr. Merck who handled the Michael Vick case. The animals (a.k.a. ‘evidence’) had to be handled, removed and documented very carefully.  The good news is that the woman has signed them all over so that they can be placed for adoption.

We have been working for over a year to complete our Egyptian Fruit Bat enclosure so that our 80 bats can have room to spread out and fly as much as they would like, without being limited by corners of a square pen.

The new enclosure consists of two identical 32' diameter octagons - one for the males and one for the females.  The octagons each have tropical landscaping, ropes and vines for the bats to climb on and access to a dark indoor roost.

The county where we chose to locate our sanctuary 10 years ago was one of the slowest growing areas in Florida...

Now growth has hit our area and will soon have an impact on our facility.

The approval of an 8,000 acre subdivision just south of our sanctuary, along with several other housing developments popping up near us tells us that it is only a matter of time.  Soon we will have pressure from neighbors to move the animals away from their families - even though we were here first. We have a plan....we just need to implement it.  Stay tuned for more news!
