Beercan is a donkey that came to us when his elderly owner passed away.
The land that he had been living on was listed for sale by the remaining family who lived hours away. Luckily, a neighbor knew that Beercan remained, abandoned, in a pasture. They fed him every day until the new owners were ready to move in. Unfortunately, they fed him the same amount that they typically fed their full-sized horse. As a result, Beercan had ‘foundered” (had serious hoof problems) in three feet and was extremely overweight.
Once everyone realized that Beercan was there, they made arrangements for us to pick him up and provide lifetime care for him at our sanctuary.
We have almost completely corrected his hoof issues with careful trimming and management and brought him down to a healthy weight, but he will never lose the ‘fat pads’ on his neck and back from his days of obesity. As long as we carefully monitor the health of his hooves, he will live a long happy life at the sanctuary, in the company of other equines.
