Elizabeth Rose is an American black bear that came to the sanctuary in 2007 at the age of only four months. She had been purchased by a man in Ohio from a breeder to be a pet for his 10 year old son.
When he realized he had made a serious mistake, trying to keep a bear as a pet, he listed her for sale on the internet, stating that if he didn’t sell her, he would be putting her in a “tasty stew.”
An animal rights group saw his ad and raised the money to send her to our sanctuary in Florida.
Upon arrival, our veterinarians determined that she was one very sick little bear. She was extremely calcium deficient and was so ill that she would not have lived long without proper veterinary care.
Elizabeth Rose is now thriving and healthy, living with three other black bears in a large habitat filled with trees to climb, pools to swim in and dens to enjoy.
