BOCAN
Bocan
is a high-content wolf dog (mostly wolf) that was rescued by a couple as a
pup. The couple both had careers in education (one being a biology teacher)
and both had experience with wolves in the wild. They did the proper
research and Bocan was raised on the proper diet with the appropriate
veterinary care. He was neutered and had a large dog as a companion and was
as sell-socialized as an animal of his nature can be.
Even
with all of these things done properly, Bocan is an example of why wolf dogs
make poor house pets, even for experienced people. Fortunately, this couple
knew enough about wolves to recognize the potential for complications before
anything bad happened. The couple was due to have a baby – and a wolf dog
in the family with a new baby on the way was an unacceptable risk. It was
not an easy decision, since they loved Bocan very much, but they chose to
place him at our sanctuary for life. This was a difficult decision for them
to make, but it was truly in the best interest of both Bocan and their baby.
Bocan
will now live out his life at our sanctuary with Gracie, a grey wolf. They
are extremely happy together and Bocan will continue to be loved by all of
his caregivers. The difference is that now his wild instincts can show
through without placing anyone, including himself, in danger.
GRACIE
Gracie
is a gray wolf who came to our sanctuary in 2000. Her prior owners dropped
her off at the Seminole Indian Reservation in Hollywood, Florida.
Apparently, they had attempted to keep her as a house pet and
discovered that it wasn’t going to work.
The Indian Reservation had no place to house her, so they contacted
us.
We know very little
about her past, but we do know what her future holds…She will live the
rest of her live at our sanctuary, in a natural, wooded setting, with
others of her own kind. She
will receive excellent care, and she is a joy to have around.
She is not expected to be a pet, but is allowed to be a wolf –
and she reminds us of that when we hear her howling every night….
